On January 9, 2018, MediaTek made a major announcement about its next-generation home entertainment platform, which now integrates artificial intelligence. This advancement allows smart home devices to feature AI-Voice and AI-Vision capabilities, making them more intuitive and responsive. During the 2018 CES, the company introduced three key products: the MT8695 4K dongle chip platform, the MT8516 system module (SoM), and the MT817x intelligent display solution.
MediaTek's Smart Voice Assistant (VAD) SoC solution is already a market leader in the smart home space. It supports multiple AI voice services such as Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, Alibaba’s Tmall Genie, and Baidu’s DuerOS. This broad compatibility has helped it gain traction among leading smart speaker brands globally. Building on this success, MediaTek is now expanding the AI voice assistant into more smart home devices. The MT8516 SoM simplifies integration of voice recognition and control into smaller devices like smart alarms, smoke detectors, and other IoT-enabled appliances.
In addition, MediaTek unveiled new smart display solutions using the MT8176 and MT8173 chips. These chips support image recognition, enhancing both home entertainment and surveillance systems. The MT8695, the industry’s first 12nm chip for 4K streaming, offers low power consumption while supporting high-quality video features like 60fps UHD 2160p, HDR10, and Dolby Vision.
Yu Renjie, Deputy General Manager of MediaTek and General Manager of the Family Entertainment Business Group, emphasized the importance of combining advanced networking technologies with AI. “Lianfa’s expertise in wireless and wired networking, along with our new AI innovations, allows us to build a next-generation home entertainment platform and an intelligent connected ecosystem,†he said. “This will extend across various IoT devices and even automotive electronics.â€
Beyond processors, MediaTek continues to invest in robust networking solutions, including 802.11ac Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 5.0, aiming to improve network performance and simplify user setup. The company offers a comprehensive product lineup, from highly integrated SoCs to standalone Wi-Fi chips and wireless access points, ensuring flexible and scalable solutions for its customers.
