On January 9, 2018, MediaTek made a significant announcement about its next-generation home entertainment platform, which now integrates artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities. This advancement allows smart home devices to feature AI-Voice and AI-Vision functions, enhancing user interaction and convenience. Alongside this new strategy, MediaTek introduced several key products at the 2018 CES, including the MT8695 4K dongle chip platform, the MT8516 system module (SoM), and the MT817x intelligent display solution.
MediaTek's Smart Voice Assistant (VAD) SoC solution is leading the way in the smart home ecosystem. It supports major AI voice services such as Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, Alibaba’s Tmall Genie, and Baidu’s DuerOS. This wide compatibility has helped it gain traction among top brands in the global smart speaker market. Building on this success, MediaTek is expanding its voice assistant technology to more smart home devices. The MT8516 SoM makes it easier for developers and manufacturers to integrate AI voice recognition into small smart devices like smart alarms and smoke detectors.
In addition, MediaTek launched smart display solutions using the MT8176 and MT8173 chips. These chips support image intelligence for home entertainment and surveillance systems, offering enhanced visual recognition features.
Watching movies is a core use case for smart home entertainment, and MediaTek introduced the industry’s first 12nm chip, the MT8695, specifically designed for 4K streaming. The MT8695 delivers high performance with low power consumption, supporting advanced multimedia features like 60fps UHD 2160p, HDR10, and Dolby Vision.
