Samsung LED movie screen first boarded China

Since the introduction of projection technology for movie playback, it has remained the primary method for watching films. However, this traditional approach is now being challenged by a new innovation—LED screens in cinemas. On February 4th, the first Samsung Cinema LED Theater in China officially opened in Shanghai, marking a significant shift: instead of projectors, the cinema now features an LED screen, signaling a new era in movie exhibition.

It all began in March last year when Samsung, a leading South Korean electronics company, announced its groundbreaking LED movie screen. The technology was first showcased at an event in Las Vegas, featuring a massive 10.3-meter-long screen installed at the Lotte Movie World Building in South Korea. Since then, Samsung has been rolling out its LED cinema screens globally, and now it has made its way to China.

What makes this LED screen so special? The Samsung LED movie screen boasts a 10.3-meter width, ultra-clear 4K resolution (4,096 x 2,160), and a brightness level of 146fL—ten times higher than traditional projectors. This makes it the only LED display on the market with HDC quality, offering an unmatched cinematic experience.

Compared to traditional projection systems, the Samsung LED screen incorporates High Dynamic Range (HDR) technology, which enhances color accuracy and contrast. This means deeper blacks, brighter whites, and more realistic image quality. Additionally, the screen delivers precise DCI-P3 color gamut even at peak brightness, ensuring vibrant and lifelike visuals for the audience.

In addition to visual improvements, the LED cinema system integrates Harman JBL audio technology. Featuring high-power speakers, surround sound design, and patented audio processing, the system creates a powerful three-dimensional sound experience that immerses viewers in the film.

Beyond movies, this LED cinema system is also ideal for corporate events, sports events, gaming competitions, concerts, and theater performances, opening up new revenue streams for theaters.

Will this upgrade in technology replace traditional cinema screens? Currently, projectors remain the most cost-effective option for theaters, while LED screens are still relatively expensive. However, as demand for better audiovisual experiences grows, the shift may become inevitable.

Data from the State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television shows that China's box office surpassed 50 billion yuan for the first time in November 2017. With more high-quality films, expanding audiences, and increasing numbers of theaters, the need for superior viewing experiences is growing. People are now expecting more immersive and realistic visuals and sounds.

On the other hand, LED screens offer a competitive edge for theaters looking to differentiate themselves. Since 2016, the global trend of building large-screen theaters has accelerated, and as the industry moves toward high-end, high-quality experiences, each format will showcase its unique strengths, helping theaters build their own brand identity.

Looking ahead, more major cinemas are expected to adopt LED cinema systems. Jin Yuanzhen, President of Samsung Electronics Greater China CE Headquarters, said, “This is the first time we’ve applied LED display technology to movie screens, entering a new era without projectors. It brings a more realistic and immersive audiovisual experience, revolutionizing how people watch films.”

According to reports, Samsung plans to install LED screens in 10% of global theaters by the end of 2020, including locations in the U.S., China, Europe, and Southeast Asia.
