VR headset 3D display health effects more serious than expected

Virtual reality (VR) headsets have raised concerns about potential health risks, although few studies have thoroughly explored these issues. As technology continues to evolve, VR devices are gaining widespread popularity, especially among younger users. In response, a research team from the University of Leeds in the UK decided to investigate the possible effects of VR on children's health. They conducted a study involving children aged 8 to 12, who played VR games for 20 minutes to observe any short-term impacts. Mark Mon-Williams, a cognitive psychology professor at the university, highlighted the risks in a recent article: "VR headsets display a 3D virtual world on a 2D screen, which can strain the visual system. While adults may experience headaches or eye discomfort, the long-term effects on children remain unclear." Led by human behavior researcher Faisal Mushtaq, the team found that some children experienced temporary vision and balance issues after just 20 minutes of VR use. The study revealed a disruption in stereo acuity, which is the ability to judge distances accurately. Additionally, participants showed immediate declines in their sense of balance after playing VR games. Although no severe vision damage was detected and the effects were short-lived, the findings suggest that VR devices could still pose significant health concerns for children. The discomfort caused by VR isn’t limited to kids—adults often report nausea and dizziness as well. Moreover, current VR hardware has limitations in availability, and technical challenges like bandwidth issues can further reduce the overall user experience. In an interview, Mushtaq emphasized the importance of understanding the safety of VR for children. "If we want to ensure that kids can safely enjoy all the exciting opportunities VR offers, it’s crucial to build a strong scientific foundation for its safe use," he said. This study serves as a critical step toward ensuring that future generations can benefit from VR without unnecessary health risks.
