Qualcomm sues Apple: bans production and sales of iPhone in China

Qualcomm has filed a lawsuit in China targeting Apple, aiming to block the tech giant from selling and manufacturing iPhones within the Chinese market. According to reports, "Qualcomm has initiated legal action in China seeking to stop Apple from selling and producing iPhones in the country. This marks the most significant legal challenge Qualcomm has ever launched against Apple. The two companies are locked in a fierce and complex legal battle." The conflict between Apple and Qualcomm began in January this year when the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) accused Qualcomm of forcing Apple to use its baseband chips while charging excessive royalties. Just three days later, Apple filed a $1 billion lawsuit against Qualcomm. Qualcomm has strongly denied the allegations, calling the lawsuit baseless and accusing Apple of misrepresenting the facts. The company also announced plans for a counterclaim, although it expressed hope that their business relationship could continue smoothly before any formal response was made. Since the dispute broke out, Apple has been withholding patent fees from Qualcomm. In May, the company reported that Qualcomm had attempted to push for a ban on iPhones in the U.S. Additionally, Apple instructed its suppliers not to pay any royalties to Qualcomm. Last week, Bruce Sewell, Apple’s outgoing general counsel, spoke about the ongoing conflict in an interview. He stated that the cost of Qualcomm's chips to Apple is approximately $18 per iPhone, plus 5% of the device's selling price. Apple believes these charges are excessively high and unsustainable. This legal battle reflects deeper tensions in the tech industry, where chip manufacturers and smartphone makers often clash over licensing terms and pricing structures. As both companies continue to fight in court, the outcome could have far-reaching implications for the global mobile technology landscape. Consumers may eventually feel the impact through higher prices or changes in product availability. For now, the war between Apple and Qualcomm remains one of the most closely watched corporate disputes in recent years.
