The evolution of mobile wireless single-chip solutions

A few years ago, I was looking for a new mobile phone with Wi-Fi capabilities, but none of the mobile phone merchants near my residence sold such phones. In fact, there are some businesses who even responded blankly to my enquiries, as if I was talking about aliens.

Soon, a few years later, the industry's efforts have brought some major technological innovations to today's wireless environment.

Due to the acquisition of Atheros CommunicaTIons by Qualcomm, UBM TechInsights decided to review the product portfolios of Qualcomm and Atheros to review the merger while conducting a dynamic research of the entire WPAN market. After the impact on the mobile phone market and other wireless chip suppliers.

Atheros has always been known for its wireless local area network (WLAN) product portfolio, and Wi-Fi related products alone account for about 80% of the company's revenue. However, over the past six years, the company has managed to increase its more diversified product portfolio through five acquisitions. Now, the company can provide solutions such as Bluetooth, GPS, Ethernet, power line network, and passive optical network (PON).

The research conducted by UBM TechInsights this time analyzed 220 mobile phones using Qualcomm baseband chips released in the past ten years. This research also uses technology adoption rate as one of the measurement standards.

Since Bluetooth technology was deployed on a large scale in 2003, Bluetooth technology has reached 100% adoption rate in mobile devices in 2010. In the same period, because Wi-Fi technology must wait for the market to mature and the technology to converge, its deployment obviously lags behind Bluetooth. However, since 2008, Wi-Fi deployment has experienced explosive growth. As of 2010, the adoption rate of Wi-Fi technology has reached 92%. This conclusion comes from the 2010 sample group (including 26 mobile phones).

Also interesting in this study is the adoption rate of combo chips. The compound chip is a multi-functional chip, or a multi-chip module (MCM) package that integrates Bluetooth and Wi-Fi technology; in many cases, the compound chip also supports FM function. Companies such as Murata are building composite MCMs with smaller footprints. Other chip vendors, such as Broadcom and Texas Instruments, develop Bluetooth / Wi-Fi / FM single-chip solutions, and module manufacturers have begun to take advantage of this technology trend.

In 2010, single-chip solutions became a trend, with a share of about 62%, while the adoption rate of composite MCM modules was 69%. The trend towards integrating more wireless connection functions is continuing to rise, such as integrating Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and FM; and most of the current composite products are mostly single-chip solutions.

In terms of general simplified solutions from module manufacturers, for example, Murata or Samsung's module products include a single chip with a separate component group-you can see it in the Samsung Galaxy Spica smartphone Samsung's module products. This Galaxy Spica phone uses Broadcom BCM4325, a single-pole double-throw (SPDT) switch and various discrete components. The module size is about 8.25 & TImes; 7.75mm.

In general, multi-chip, multi-functional solutions are less common, such as the modules found in Sony Ericsson X2 phones. In this case, the module manufacturer, Murata, integrated an Atheros AR6002 Wi-Fi chip, a Qualcomm Bluetooth single chip, and switches with other components in a package with a package size of approximately 9.70 & TImes; 9.17 mm.

Some companies still choose to place multiple chips and discrete devices on the main circuit board. For example, the Wi-Fi part of the Samsung GT-I5503 Galaxy 5 phone uses Atheros AR6003, and the Broadcom BCM2078 chip is used to implement Bluetooth / FM functions.

With the adoption rate of multi-function (Bluetooth / Wi-Fi) single-chip solutions exceeding 60%, many of them are provided by Atheros, Broadcom and Marvell-it seems that Qualcomm is best to adopt an expanded product line Actions to incorporate single-package (MCM) wireless connectivity solutions into its product portfolio. However, it may be several years before Qualcomm launches a single-package solution, even if the company has acquired Atheros.

Broadcom and TI currently have most of the design orders in the composite Bluetooth / Wi-Fi / FM chip market, which can be seen from the many mobile phones and tablet computers we have disassembled in the past year. In terms of integration, TI has released a single-chip solution WL1283 that integrates four wireless technologies such as Bluetooth / Wi-Fi / FM / GPS, and has become the first choice for the composite chip of the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet. Broadcom has not yet released a single-chip solution that integrates four RF technologies. Therefore, as TI successfully designed this solution, TI has a greater chance of gaining a larger market share in this connected market that is currently under its control. The rate may even replace Broadcom as the market leader.

Nevertheless, if Qualcomm can take advantage of its new partner Atheros to provide a more cost-effective integrated solution, then Qualcomm can still be said to occupy a Favorable location.
