Japan: Diamond LED UV LED power boost for E. coli disinfection

Japanese researchers have recently increased the output of diamond deep-UV LEDs to 0.3mW and used them for the disinfection of E. coli. The latest UV LED radiation wavelength is approximately 235 nm, which is equivalent to the excitation energy of diamond. Its external quantum efficiency is about 0.01%. The above results were reported at the nano Tech 2010 exhibition and conference held in Tokyo, Japan.

235 nm wavelength light provides sufficient energy to destroy chemical bonds in DNA and RNA chains in microorganisms such as bacteria and viruses. The adjacent two thymines on the single strand of DNA are bound by a covalent bond, so that a thymine-adenine (TA) pair that hydrogen bonds is not formed normally in the DNA double helix strand, thus disturbing the genetic information.


Currently, the most commonly used in the field of ultraviolet disinfection is the bulky 254 nm mercury lamp. UV disinfection energy

Promoting the above-mentioned LED research and development is the work of Satoshi Yamasaki and Toshiharu Makino, researchers at the Energy Technology Research Institute (ETRI) under the Japan National Institute of Industrial Technology (AIST). They collaborate with National Institute of Materials Science (NIMS) and Japanese industrial diamond manufacturer Syntek. Devices for disinfection applications are being developed in collaboration with lighting and optics company Iwasaki Electric.
