In the context of regional competition within the smart equipment industry, China's domestic smart manufacturing equipment is currently concentrated in areas with well-established industrial foundations. With supportive policies driving growth, four major industrial clusters are emerging across the Pearl River Delta, Yangtze River Delta, Bohai Rim, and central and western regions. These clusters are expected to further elevate the level of smart manufacturing at the regional level.
The Pearl River Delta and the Yangtze River Delta stand out as core manufacturing hubs, playing a leading role in advancing smart manufacturing. In the Pearl River Delta, Guangzhou CNC is a top manufacturer of professional CNC machine tools, with its annual production and sales accounting for nearly half of the domestic market for similar products. The region benefits from strong human resources, technological capabilities, capital, and supportive policies, creating a solid foundation for the development of smart manufacturing equipment.
The Yangtze River Delta, centered around Shanghai, Jiangsu, and Zhejiang, has a robust base in electronic information technology. Each city has developed unique intelligent manufacturing industries based on their strengths. With the release of the "Yangtze River Delta Urban Agglomeration Development Plan," the region is accelerating the formation of an integrated industrial chain covering intelligent design, smart products, smart equipment, and related technologies and services.
The Bohai Rim region, anchored by the Liaodong and Shandong Peninsulas, includes cities like Beijing, Harbin, and Shenyang. It boasts strong scientific research capabilities, with institutions such as the Institute of Automation, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Harbin Institute of Technology, and Beihang University making significant contributions to robotics. Leading companies like Shenyang Xinsong and HIT Robot have helped establish smart manufacturing clusters in the area.
In the central and western regions, including Wuhan, Changsha, and Chongqing, the smart equipment industry started later but has grown rapidly by leveraging external technological resources, particularly in robotics. This has led to the emergence of new industries such as Eft.
Currently, national policies are being implemented nationwide to promote smart manufacturing. Over the past few years, various documents and measures have been introduced to foster this sector, creating a favorable environment for the transformation and upgrading of traditional manufacturing. As these policies continue to take effect, more companies are adopting smart manufacturing practices, and the trend toward high-end manufacturing is becoming increasingly evident.
For example, the "Intelligent Manufacturing Development Plan (2016–2020)" issued by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology aims to develop over 60 types of key smart manufacturing technologies and equipment by 2020, reaching international standards and meeting over 50% of the domestic demand. Supporting policies like the "Intelligent Manufacturing Engineering Implementation Guidelines (2016–2020)" have also been launched to accelerate industry growth.
Moreover, many local governments are actively promoting smart manufacturing by building industry clusters tailored to their specific strengths. Several large enterprises with strong innovation capabilities and promising market prospects have emerged, forming clusters of intelligent manufacturing companies and driving regional industrial development.
