In the context of regional competition within the smart equipment industry, China's current smart manufacturing equipment is primarily concentrated in areas with well-established industrial foundations. With supportive policies driving growth, four major industrial clusters are emerging across the Pearl River Delta, Yangtze River Delta, Bohai Rim, and central-western regions. These clusters are expected to further elevate the level of smart manufacturing in their respective areas.
The Pearl River Delta and Yangtze River Delta, as core manufacturing hubs in China, are at the forefront of smart manufacturing development. The Pearl River Delta benefits from a strong control system infrastructure, with Guangzhou CNC being a leading manufacturer of professional CNC machine tools. Its annual production and sales of CNC systems account for nearly half of the domestic market. Additionally, the region has a solid foundation in human resources, technology, capital, and industrial support, which has helped it develop distinct characteristics in smart manufacturing equipment.
The Yangtze River Delta, encompassing Jiangsu, Shanghai, and Zhejiang, has a strong base in electronic information technology. Each city has developed its own intelligent manufacturing equipment industries based on its unique technological and industrial advantages. With the release of the "Yangtze River Delta Urban Agglomeration Development Plan," the region is accelerating the formation of a complete industrial chain that integrates intelligent design, smart products, smart equipment, and intelligent technologies and services.
The Bohai Rim region, centered around the Liaodong and Shandong Peninsulas, includes cities like Beijing, Harbin, and Shenyang. It boasts strong scientific research capabilities, with institutions such as the Institute of Automation under the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Harbin Institute of Technology, and Beihang University making significant contributions in robotics. Leading enterprises like Shenyang Xinsong and HIT Robot have also played a key role in fostering smart manufacturing clusters.
In the central and western regions, including Wuhan, Changsha, and Chongqing, the smart equipment industry started later but has rapidly grown by leveraging external technological resources. These areas have gained an advantage in robotics and have seen the emergence of new industries such as Eft.
Nationally, various policies have been introduced to promote smart manufacturing. In recent years, China has issued numerous documents aimed at accelerating the development of smart manufacturing, creating a favorable environment for the transformation and upgrading of traditional industries. These policy measures are continuously delivering benefits, encouraging more companies to adopt smart manufacturing practices. As targeted initiatives continue, China’s smart manufacturing level is expected to rise steadily, supporting its broader goals of becoming a global manufacturing leader.
The "Intelligent Manufacturing Development Plan (2016–2020)" issued by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology set a goal of developing over 60 types of key intelligent manufacturing technologies and equipment by 2020, aiming to reach international standards and meet more than 50% of the domestic demand. Additional industrial support policies have further accelerated the pace of development in this sector.
Moreover, many regions are actively building smart manufacturing clusters tailored to their local conditions. A growing number of large enterprises with strong innovation capabilities and promising market prospects have emerged, contributing to the formation of intelligent manufacturing enterprise clusters and industrial ecosystems.
