Samsung and Harman Join Forces to Create Intelligent Transportation Network to Announce 5G Connected Car Plan

Samsung made headlines at the CES press conference by unveiling significant advancements in the 5G domain. Among the highlights was "the industry's first 5G-enabled vehicle solution," known as the Telematics Control Unit (TCU). This innovative product is a result of Samsung's collaboration with Harman, a company it acquired in late 2016. Harman is well-known for its premium audio systems and has a long-standing reputation in automotive navigation solutions. The TCU has already been integrated into several popular car models, showcasing its potential in the evolving connected-car landscape. ![Image](http://i.bosscdn.com/blog/3E/B6/0D/22FB1011FFm.jpeg) Looking ahead, the latest TCU is expected to be deployed over the next decade, transforming vehicles from isolated machines into nodes in a vast transportation network. Powered by C-V2X technology, Samsung and Harman’s 5G solutions enable cars to communicate with each other, traffic lights, and external management systems. In essence, the TCU will serve as the gateway for vehicles to join the broader smart mobility ecosystem. The new TCU is designed to work with existing 4G Cat16 networks and will seamlessly transition to faster 5G connections in the future. Samsung also revealed that it has signed an agreement with a major European automaker, though the identity of the partner will be officially announced at the CES event hosted by Samsung and Harman. Beyond the TCU, Samsung highlighted its Intelligent Digital Cockpit platform, which was showcased last year at CES. This system merges the car’s instrument panel with the infotainment system, leveraging Harman’s audio expertise, Samsung’s Bixby assistant, and cloud-based technologies to deliver a more immersive and personalized driving experience. Harman’s Dinesh Paliwal shared some exciting features, such as the ability for drivers to use a camera in their home refrigerator to check what’s missing before heading to the supermarket. The demonstration also included a feature that allows a car to recognize which driver can access it—similar to how smartphones identify users. This functionality is now being introduced directly on the car’s dashboard, along with an advanced heads-up display (HUD) that provides real-time guidance. Samsung is set to roll out 5G updates during the PyeongChang Winter Olympics next month, in partnership with KTCorporation. Tim Baxter from the company mentioned that Samsung and SK Telecom have successfully tested 4G and 5G networks, proving that 5G can stream 8K video even on a high-speed train moving at 60 mph. These developments underscore Samsung’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of connectivity and innovation in the automotive sector.
