Following the event, AMD’s Chief Technology Officer, Mark Papermaster, gave an interview where he discussed the success of the Ryzen processor. He noted that thanks to Ryzen, AMD has achieved a 40-50% market share in certain areas, which is something rarely seen before. While these markets are currently limited to the United States, it’s still a significant achievement for AMD. After all, the U.S. is the home base for both AMD and Intel, and succeeding there is vital for AMD’s growth.

The success of the Ryzen processor is closely tied to its performance. Without the new product line, such achievements wouldn’t have been possible. Papermaster shared insights from online stores in the U.S., where users praised the Ryzen processor. He checked the reviews of Ryzen 7 1800X on U.S. and Asian platforms, where it received a 4.6 out of 5 rating, with 83% of users giving it a 5-star review. In comparison, the Core i7-8700K scored 4.6 as well, but only 68% of users gave it a 5-star rating.

There’s no doubt that the success of Ryzen stems from AMD’s strategy of delivering high performance at a lower cost. The company has taken a cost-effective approach, avoiding direct competition with Intel in terms of pure performance. Previously, AMD struggled with outdated architectures like the FX series, which didn’t attract much attention. However, Ryzen is different. While it may not yet match Intel in absolute performance, the gap is acceptable, and the significantly lower price has made it very appealing to consumers.

Although AMD’s current success is mainly in specific markets, the Chinese market still has a long way to go before surpassing Intel. For example, on JD.com’s official store, the Ryzen 7 1800X has over 4,900 reviews, while the Core i7-8700K has more than 7,000. Even though the Ryzen 1800X is slightly more expensive, it was released nearly six months earlier than the 8th-generation Intel processors. This shows that while AMD is making progress, it still has a long road ahead to challenge Intel in China. This isn’t just about price or performance—it’s about building trust and market presence over time.
