According to recent reports from Japanese media, a leading Japanese manufacturer has introduced an innovative robot designed for use in logistics warehouses. This advanced machine is capable of moving autonomously and efficiently loading and unloading cargo. Equipped with two highly flexible arms, it can retrieve items of different sizes, shapes, and weights from shelves and transport them accurately.
Traditional robots have struggled with handling a wide variety of goods, but this new model is specifically engineered to manage such diversity. As e-commerce continues to grow, the need for handling small quantities of multiple products is increasing. The company aims to launch this robot within the next two to three years, after final testing and optimization.
Currently, existing transfer robots in warehouses are limited to transporting uniform packages, such as identical cartons. However, retrieving specific items from boxes or handling irregularly shaped objects remains a challenge. The new robot overcomes this by combining a mobile flatbed with two lift tables and two robotic arms. One arm features a suction device, while the other is equipped with two robotic fingers. Once positioned at a shelf, the robot adjusts the lift table’s height, uses a camera on the arm to identify the item, and then lifts it according to its size and weight.
The system consists of five key components: a flatbed, two lift tables, and two robotic arms. For smooth operation, these parts must communicate and coordinate effectively. During movement, the robot uses sensors to detect the distance to the shelf and only activates the robotic arms when it's about 1 meter away. This reduces unnecessary communication and speeds up the process. From stopping in front of the shelf to removing an item, the entire operation takes just 3 seconds.
Japanese media highlighted that with the rise of e-commerce, there is a growing demand for efficient solutions that can handle diverse and small-volume shipments. This robot, with its advanced capabilities, is expected to meet that need. The company plans to first implement the system in its own logistics warehouse before considering commercial sales to other businesses. This development marks a significant step forward in automation and could revolutionize how warehouses operate in the future.
