Samsung holds OLEDs to support Micro LEDs? A gamble that is unpredictable in the end.

According to Korean media, because LED%C3%E6%B0%E5.html' style='font-weight: bold;color: #900916;border-bottom: 1px #900916 dotted; padding-bottom: 2px;' target= '_blank'> OLED panel demand may slow down, Samsung has shelved plans to invest nearly $1 billion to build a new OLED panel factory A5 plant, in addition to worrying about demand, it may also plan to use funds to develop microLED panel technology to accelerate the Production of technology.

Problems faced by OLED panels

In 2017, due to Apple's iPhoneX adopting OLED panel, OLED panel has become the trend of smart phones. Some people think that if mobile phones do not use OLED panels, they cannot become high-end mobile phones. However, in the case of OLEDs becoming popular, OLED panels are also facing problems.

At present, the supply of small and medium-sized OLED panels for smartphones is tight. Samsung, which has a production capacity of more than 90% of small and medium-sized OLED panels, is fully producing OLED panels to supply Apple. However, another panel supplier in Korea, LGD, is working hard to build an OLED panel factory. Panel suppliers BOE and Huaxing Optoelectronics are also expanding or building small and medium-sized OLED panel factories. Among them, BOE has started production of small and medium-sized OLED panels in October last year and is building a second small and medium-sized OLED panel production line.

However, the demand for OLED panels is growing, and the production capacity is even bigger! As more panel makers are able to achieve mass production and continue to expand production lines, OLED panel capacity will see explosive growth in the next 2-3 years, but demand may not keep up, global OLED panel capacity is likely to appear The surplus situation, which will lead to the price war of the OLED panel industry, is one of the reasons why Samsung has set aside the A5 factory plan.

Previously, Samsung chose to reduce the TFT-LCD panel capacity by recognizing that the expansion of China's TFT-LCD panel capacity may lead to a decline in the price of TFT-LCD panels worldwide.

Samsung may focus resources on developing microLED technology

At this year's Consumer Electronics Show, Samsung did not even mention OLED. Instead, the world's largest TV maker showed off a new huge 146-inch Micro LED TV, also known as "The Wall." This is also the first time in the global panel companies to showcase microLED TVs, which shows that it has made progress in microLED panel technology.

Compared with the OLED panel technology, the microLED panel has a longer life, more delicate color display, and has the advantages of bright color, light weight, low power consumption, etc., so it is considered to be one of the best technologies to replace OLED.

Unlike OLEDs, which are being promoted by LG and other competitors, Micro LEDs are not yet commercialized. But Samsung said it will definitely be listed this year.

Samsung has always been willing to invest heavily in the development of advanced technology. Last year's capital expenditure reached 44 billion US dollars. It is the company with the highest capital expenditure among global enterprises. It is generally believed that in addition to investing funds in developing memory chips and semiconductor processes, panel technology is also its One of the directions, this is one of the reasons why it took the lead in microLED panel technology.

The development of more advanced panel technology can avoid the price war with Chinese companies after large-scale production of OLED panels, and make a huge profit by first commissioning microLED panel technology, just as it was on small and medium-sized OLED panels (2017 OLED panel) The profit provided by Samsung for the business is second only to the memory chip business).

Perhaps considering these factors, Samsung has shelved plans for the A5 factory of the OLED panel factory, and it is likely to invest money in the development of microLED panel technology. Considering the low yield of early microLED panels, the microLED panel is expensive, microLED. The panel will also be used first in consumer electronics for small and medium screens such as smartphones.

MicroLED: manufacturing costs and difficulty are too high

Several industry giants see MicroLED as the next big trend in display technology. In addition to Samsung's entry, Apple also recently acquired MicroLED manufacturer LuxVue, and even submitted a foldable iPhone patent using MicroLED technology, which made us look forward to the Apple Watch and iPhone using this panel.

Although the higher brightness, wider color gamut and modular structure of the MicroLED look quite attractive, it is still a nascent technology. The cost of the MicroLED panel is very high, and the production difficulty is also very large, even exceeding the OLED panel. Be aware that making and placing millions of pixels of LED lights and getting them to work together is definitely not an easy task.

Sony actually started exploring MicroLED technology very early, but they have suspended research and development of this technology in TV. According to reports, Sony's first-generation MicroLED display produced in 2012 required 6.22 million independent LEDs, which not only consumes very high energy, but also has a low yield. Although these problems have improved, it is still extremely difficult to achieve mass production of MicroLEDs.

It is not easy to shrink the MicroLED panel to the mainstream TV size. Samsung's The Wall is an amazing product experiment, but it is actually derived from the company's cinema technology, a giant screen for commercial theaters, and is currently not downsized.

If you look closely, you can actually find the stitching gap of each module of The Wall. Samsung said the technology can be scaled down due to its modular design, but they are currently unable to maintain a high enough pixel density for 4K resolution. Even if Samsung can make a MicroLED TV that is suitable for ordinary people's homes, it is unrealistic in terms of cost.

Is seen as the next trend in display technology, can MicroLED shake the status of OLED?
