Today, Xiao Bian responded to some comments and noticed a fellow asking for advice about SSDs. Many people wonder whether SSDs and traditional mechanical hard drives are now similar in terms of performance. Xiao Bian believes it's important to explain this topic further. After all, no one wants to spend extra money unless necessary.
First, let's address the question directly. There's absolutely no comparison between the performance of an SSD and a mechanical hard drive. The biggest difference lies in their response times, continuous read/write speeds, and 4K file handling capabilities. SSDs outperform mechanical drives significantly in these areas. Even if one uses an i5 processor and the other an i7, the former will feel much faster due to the SSD's superior speed.
In short, SSDs are here to stay and their popularity will only grow. Early in 2017, Xiao Bian emphasized that prices would remain high throughout the year. Recent reports suggest that the price hikes for SSDs might continue through the third quarter, with no signs of a downturn until the first half of next year. While the reasons behind this are complex, personally, I believe the price increase trend may ease slightly by this time next year. Only in the fourth quarter might we see stabilization or even a decline. Therefore, if you urgently need an SSD, don't hesitate—buy it now. If your budget is tight, here are a few suggestions for you to consider.
Hybrid Hard Drives
A hybrid hard drive essentially adds a small amount of solid-state flash memory (usually around 8GB) to a mechanical hard drive. This setup employs a special caching mechanism to enhance performance. For instance, when loading large files like games, the hybrid drive can access them quickly, especially when frequently accessed, thanks to caching. The read performance of this type of drive is nearly identical to that of an SSD, making boot times nearly indistinguishable from those of an SSD. However, when it comes to writing files, the hybrid drive falters, with writing speeds dropping to that of a regular mechanical hard drive.
Of course, hybrid drives are generally cheaper than SSDs, making them a viable option for those with limited budgets.
Second, Intel Rapid Storage Technology
Intel's Rapid Storage Technology is a fantastic way to boost performance at a reasonable cost, though older motherboards may not support it (this applies to Intel platforms). In simple terms, as long as you have a small SSD (even a used one with 64GB), you can accelerate your computer, giving your mechanical drive SSD-like performance. The principle behind this technology is similar to that of a hybrid drive, but the implementation differs. For more details on how to use this method, check out Xiao Bian's post titled "Accelerate Your Mechanical Drive with This Trick!"
Additionally, starting with the 200-series chipsets, Intel's Rapid Storage Technology has been upgraded to "Optane Mode," which requires both 200-series chipsets and 7th-generation Core processors. This upgrade improves disk performance and can even rival SSDs. However, the overall cost remains high.
Third, PrimoCache Software
If the previous two methods require a significant investment, Xiao Bian has another option that costs less but offers the poorest performance among the three—it’s more of a supplementary measure. Check out Xiao Bian's guide on "Turning Your Old Mechanical Hard Drive into an SSD!" This method uses memory as a cache to assist in read/write operations on the secondary hard drive. Note that while this method incurs minimal overhead, it does have prerequisites. If your memory is too small, forget about it...
In summary, the best solution is undoubtedly to invest in an SSD if your budget allows. However, if your funds are limited or timing isn't ideal, the three options suggested by Xiao Bian are worth considering. Currently, Xiao Bian is sticking with Method 2, which provides acceptable performance at a relatively low cost—a good compromise (since there’s an old hard drive already in service, there’s no rush to switch to a hybrid drive).
