Looking around the camera: opening the "Eye of the Eyes" for the car

The application of the surround camera may be the next explosion in the field of car safety. Compared with the rear view camera, the cost of the surround view camera is not only much higher, but also superior in terms of security protection. As long as the surround vision image system is installed in the car, the driver can see the image around the car through a camera with a well-positioned position. In this way, not only can the effective occurrence of reverse rolling accidents be effectively eliminated, but probabilistic events such as scraping the bumper and the hub can also be avoided.

The surround camera, or panoramic image monitoring system, can stitch the bird's view in all directions on the top of the car and display it dynamically on the LCD screen inside the car. In addition, the look-around camera can also identify the parking lane sign, curb and vicinity. vehicle. Some of the most advanced surround vision imaging systems with sonar use provide real-time warnings to alert drivers and obstacles too close.

How the surround camera works

As early as 2007, Nissan took the lead in using a surround camera on the Infiniti EX35. Today, Nissan's more than a dozen models, including the small Versa Note and the compact Rogue SUV, use a panoramic image surveillance system. A camera is mounted in the middle of the front grille of the car, and two super wide-angle cameras are mounted on the edge of the side view mirror to present images of the sides of the car in a downward viewing angle, while the fourth camera is mounted above the license plate. The system software puts together the images captured by the four cameras and inserts a top view of the car in the middle. It looks like a drone hovering over the car and transmitting the picture to the central display in real time.

So how does the surround camera work in daily life? On the one hand, the owner can check whether the car is parked in the center of the lane; secondly, if it is in a strange environment, even the lane appears curved, downhill or the rearview mirror does not start at all. When the action status occurs, the surround camera can be used. Of course, if you are in reverse or vertical and side parking, you can use the panoramic image monitoring system without the automatic parking function. Nearly "perfectly" parked in the parking space, keeping a distance of about 15 to 30 centimeters from the road.

At present, many cars will automatically open the rear view image when reversing, touch the "camera" sign, the road condition information in front of the car will appear immediately, of course, these cameras can only play at 5-7mph speed.

Each has its own merits

At present, many panoramic image systems can provide multi-view images. For example, most models of Nissan's surround view cameras display four stitching pictures. Of course, the default display of the system is the bird view around the body, but in fact, you can set to display only the front view or the rear view. When only the rear view screen is turned on, this is no different from the car with the rear view camera installed; on the Nissan car with the front view function, you will find the outside of the right side of the car on the display of the center console. Image, a dotted line is used to indicate the width of the body, preventing the tooth from scraping the wheel.

In addition, some car OEMs even offer wide-angle or super wide-angle forward/back-view images, and to help off-road vehicles hook up trailers, some SUVs may offer a rear-facing close-up close-up image. However, these cars may only have a rearview camera installed.

BMW's central control display has a wide aspect ratio. In addition to displaying 360-degree panoramic images, when an object is detected to be close, the red, yellow and green signs in the display will inform the owner of the obstacle's distance. Because the German car not only requires unlimited speed on the highway, but also has the flexibility to travel through the streets. Therefore, the German car manufacturer installed a camera at the front wheel eyebrow and displayed the picture taken in a split view. However, because it is different from the conventional picture presentation form, there is a certain skill in the car owner to say that you have to understand the graphic.

As an advocate of panoramic imaging technology, Nissan currently offers mobile object detection. When the sensor detects that an object (including bicycles, pets, young children, or even children who are running away with the mother) breaks into the motorway, the system will ring to remind the driver.

Can image surveillance be recreated?

In order to win high-end customers, the car main engine factory is in the function and safety field, and it is no longer good, and it is also trying to improve the convenience of car control. Land Rover launched the concept and technology of the "transparent hood" this year. It can “see through” the occluded terrain through the hood, making the hood “transparent”, further enhancing the driver's mastery of the road. In fact, the hood does not become transparent, but the holographic image provides the driver with the underlying road conditions, so that hidden obstacles are clearly visible. The camera mounted on the front grille of the car can record the occluded road surface and feed it back on the windshield, thus making the line of sight seem to penetrate the hood and the engine compartment. With this technology, the driver can clearly see the holographic real-life image of the ground from the front wheel when going on a cross-country, especially on a steep hillside or through a harsh ground.

At present, many high-end off-road vehicles also have a fifth camera installed on the top of the rear door to ensure that the rear view picture is not distorted. However, the off-road vehicle still needs to install a camera with a lower position to provide a picture near the body, because most of the off-road vehicle's back is tilted backwards, and the range of 0.6-1.5 m behind the car is the blind line of sight. This camera can also replace the rear view camera, especially when the rear panel of the off-road vehicle is full of luggage. Tesla and other car OEMs are now developing digital rearview imaging systems that seamlessly splicing the landscape of the car's side and rearview cameras to create a wide aspect ratio view.
