Liu Dunyi, Shi Shineng, was born in Xinning County, Hunan Province on September 19, 1897. He studied in Japan in 1913 and graduated from the Architectural Department of Tokyo Higher Industrial School in 1921. After returning to China in 1922, he co-founded Huahai's construction department in Shanghai with Liu Shiying and others. In 1925, he taught at the Architectural Section of Suzhou Industrial College. In 1927, the school merged with Southeast University and in 1928 it was renamed Central University. In 1931, he joined the China Construction Society and in 1932 he was the director of the Literature Department of the Society. In 1943, he was a professor at the Central University. Since 1944, he has served as the director of the Department of Architecture and concurrently as a professor at Chongqing University. Since 1946, he has served as Dean of the School of Engineering of the Central University. From 1949 to 1952, he served as professor of architecture at Nanjing University. From 1952 to 1968, he was a professor at Nanjing Institute of Technology. During the period from 1960 to 1968, he was also the head of the Department of Architecture. In 1953, the Chinese Architecture Research Office was founded. In 1955, he was elected as a member of the Faculty of Science and Technology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
Mr. Liu Dunyi has conducted field visits to ancient buildings and gardens in Beijing, Hebei, Henan, Shandong, Jiangsu, Sichuan, Yunnan and other places, and has written dozens of investigation reports and obtained a number of research results. Since 1959, he has presided over the "History of Ancient Chinese Architecture", which lasted for seven years, and was published in the "Cultural Revolution".
His important academic works include "Chinese Housing Overview", "Suzhou Classical Garden" and "Liu Dun Frames Anthology 1-4 Volumes".
Mr. Liu Dunxi died in Nanjing on April 30, 1968.
