STMicroelectronics Explains the Application Prospect of MEMS Smart Sensors

As the most popular OS today, Android developers are trying to add more killer apps to consumers by constantly adding sensors to smartphones. How does your company view the future application of MEMS in smart phones? Is there a solution to support Android OS and the corresponding apps store?

In early 2003, our first three-axis accelerometer chips went offline. I think that after 2012, basically every mobile phone will have an accelerometer chip; after 2013, more than 75% of mobile phones will be equipped with gyroscopes.

STMicroelectronics has spent huge sums to develop this product with only one goal: to become the undisputed market leader. Since 2008, we have been the largest supplier of MEMS chips in the mobile phone and consumer markets.

The mobile phone is a very good distributed basic device. With the addition of sensors, the mobile phone will form the world's most widely distributed wireless sensor network. Upstream and downstream enterprises in this industry will be the beneficiaries, and the sensors will be responsible for collecting the external world. Data, different application systems will mine the data sent by sensors.

Although we are a hardware MEMS supplier, we can provide application-level software solutions by working with strong software vendors, especially Chinese partners. It is also because of our active software development that ST can support the Android operating system and other mainstream mobile operating systems.

It has become a trend to include MEMS sensors in all mobile devices such as mobile phones, PCs, and netbooks, but the use of MEMS in another type of so-called fixed-location wireless sensor networks is also very popular. What is your company's assessment of the development of the market? Is there a corresponding product and program?

Mobile phones with built-in sensors have gradually formed a powerful wireless sensor network, but there are not many applications using this widely-covered sensor network. At the same time, the market for fixed-point wireless sensor networks is still small. However, I think the Internet of Things will promote the deployment of fixed-point wireless sensor networks. Smart sensors are the key technology for implementing the concept of the Internet of Things and are the bridges connecting the cold electronic virtual world with the energetic and passionate human world.

Taking STMicroelectronics' patented smart sensor iNEMO as an example, it integrates three sensors (including accelerometers, gyroscopes, geomagnetism, and pressure sensors), signal processing, and low-power RF data transmission. Significantly improve the function and performance of various applications.

In these multi-sensor products, integrated sensors can implement autonomous and automated systems, monitor specific conditions, and perform corresponding operations based on the monitoring results. Users do not need or require only minimal intervention. In addition, the 'smart sensor' combines MEMS devices with integrated processing capabilities to independently operate sensor-related algorithms outside of the main processor, helping to reduce overall system power consumption, which is especially important for handheld devices with extremely fast battery consumption.

Can you imagine connecting many smartphones with built-in MEMS sensors in the future to form a smartphone-based wireless sensor network and generating related applications based on this network?

I firmly believe that the popularity of sensors in mobile phones will become higher and higher. I also believe that the customer is looking for a one-stop MEMS supplier, which is the real reason for our strategy to develop products that provide accelerometers, gyroscopes, compasses, altimeters and microphones. Using cell phone sensors can develop many, many applications that are absolutely beyond imagination.

MEMS will find more opportunities in consumer electronics and mobile applications in the future. What new features do you think will be integrated in next-generation MEMS devices? Which new applications will result?

We need to minimize product size, embed more new features, and reduce power consumption, while still not affecting the resolution, accuracy, and stability of the product. The Cristallo accelerometers, three-axis digital gyroscopes, and geomagnetic modules released by STMicroelectronics in the first few quarters are good examples. Our plan is to improve the data processing capabilities of sensors to enable smart sensor hubs on mobile phones.

As far as new applications are concerned, I can give two examples. In the field of health care, our insulin pump, developed in cooperation with Debiotech, accurately simulates the secretion process of the islet glands, continuously injects insulin into the body, and detects possible malfunctions of the syringe pump, providing patients with a deeper level of protection. . MEMS-based Jewel Syringe Pumps are less costly than existing solutions, and reliability and accuracy are greatly improved.

ST's MEMS pressure sensor is another core technology for innovative applications: smart contact lenses that can detect and observe changes in intraocular pressure 24 hours a day. As a result of collaborative development with Sensimed, this auxiliary diagnostic tool can help specialists find glaucoma earlier, and can better match the patient's internal physiological clock with simultaneous therapy to achieve the best therapeutic effect.

Is ST planning to integrate MEMS sensors and audio amplifiers, wireless interfaces, power management and other analog technologies into a single ASSP or ASIC in the future?

We integrate different functions according to the customer's needs. Take Cristallo as an example, this latest ultra-low-power accelerometer has integrated an intelligent power management system and a memory that can reduce the overall system power consumption of the target application. This is the advantage of a large semiconductor company doing MEMS business. Because ST has an ultra-wide product line and involves a variety of application areas, we have a variety of different modules that can quickly integrate these modules according to application needs.

What are the factors that customers care most about in the MEMS procurement process? How does ST provide customers with richer and more complete technical support and services?

STMicroelectronics provides targeted services to customers in different regions of the world and in different markets. At present, we mainly target the consumer market, but we also provide services to customers in the automotive, medical and industrial markets by establishing long-term business partnerships. . Each customer has its own unique needs and requirements. What we can do is listen to the opinions of our customers and use them to guide our product development direction and market activities. We always keep in mind that time is the core; customers, talents and products are the three most important pillars of the company.

What do you think are the key factors for ST's success in the MEMS market?

Our success in the market and our leadership gained are due to four factors:

1. Customer trust gained through excellence in technical support, product delivery, and product quality.

2. Flexible and flexible product development. We continue to promote the market and provide innovative products. Competitors, including newly emerging companies, cannot keep up with us.

3. Timely capacity investment. In 2005, the MEMS market did not exist yet, and we hardly received any orders. However, because we are optimistic about this market, we have established the world's first 8-inch MEMS manufacturing factory in a forward-looking manner. Our product development and manufacturing capabilities and market forecasts work together to create a dynamic and innovative market landscape.

4. Talent and innovation. The R&D team is willing to lead the market and meet customer needs in a timely manner. They are full of passion, perseverance, and flexible thinking. In my opinion, this is the largest asset of STMicroelectronics.

The entire team has a deep understanding of the above four major success factors. They have become our DNA. Every day we repeatedly emphasize the important role of these four elements. As the saying goes, "business is difficult to keep business difficult," and after years of unremitting efforts we have become MEMS leaders. However, in the face of pressure from our competitors, we have always maintained a sense of crisis and are passionate about maintaining "nothingness in this area." "Controversial market leader" status.
