Google Inc. on Wednesday unveiled a new operating system for cars, Android Auto. At the moment, Google is trying to spread its influence from the web and mobile devices to new screens and more applications.
Google said that more than 40 automakers have joined the Open Auto Alliance, an industry group established in January, to promote connected automotive technology.
Google said that the first cars equipped with the Android Auto operating system will be available this year.
Google redesigned the Android mobile operating system on Android Auto to make it easier for drivers to use applications and services without looking away from the road and without leaving the steering wheel.
The operating system will display on the dashboard of the car while highlighting common services such as navigation, communication and music. The system works in conjunction with a smartphone connected to the car.
The driver can control the system via sound or control buttons on the steering wheel. For example, if the mobile phone receives a text message, the dashboard will display a notification, and the system will read the message content to the driver. After that, the driver only needs to say "reply" and read the reply.
Google said other companies will design applications for Android Auto, including music applications Pandora Media, Songza and SpoTIfy.
