Entering the era of wearable devices? Meixin exhibits body measurement T-shirts

Maxim Integrated has trial-produced T-shirts embedded with various sensors and capable of measuring vital signs data, and showed them to guests at the "2013 InternaTIonal CES". The company calls it a "Fit Shirt."

The Fit shirt uses embedded sensors to measure ECG, body temperature and user activity, etc. It is envisaged to be used by medical institutions to continuously monitor the vital signs of patients. A variety of ICs from Meixin are used in the T-shirts, and the purpose is to demonstrate the advanced technology of the company. In addition, there are predictions that the market for such wearable devices will expand in the future, so Meixin expects it to become a new application market.

The heart rate, activity and ECG data measured by the sensor in the T-shirt are displayed on the tablet monitor

This T-shirt has sensors for electrocardiography (including sensors for reference signals) embedded in 4 sleeves, etc. Since the sensor also detects multiple noise signals, the algorithm used to extract the desired signal is the technology of Singapore's Clearbridge VitalSign. In addition, in order to reduce the discomfort when wearing T-shirts, dry electrodes developed by Orbital Research of the United States will be used.

A circuit board and rechargeable batteries encapsulating various control circuits are embedded in the T-shirt chest. The control IC adopts Maxim's MCU "MAXQ612", the power management IC adopts "MAX8671", the temperature sensor adopts "MAX6656", and the ESD protection IC adopts "MAX3204". In addition, it is equipped with a Bluetooth communication function, which can send the information obtained by the sensor to the outside.

At present, the Fit shirt is still in the prototype stage, so it can only be driven by the built-in rechargeable battery for about 7.5 hours. However, through the development and optimization in the next two years or so, it will be possible to drive with a button battery for 24 hours.

Continuously monitoring critical asset parameters such as vibration, temperature, speed, and numerous other condition indicators is a proven method for anticipating and preventing mechanical failures – proven in tens of thousands of industrial facilities around the world by delivering tangible benefits such as:

â€¢ Improved protection from catastrophic failures • Better machinery reliability/availability • Fewer process interruptions • Enhanced maintenance/outage planning • Lower maintenance and repair costs • Longer intervals between outages • Reduced insurance premiums And when it comes to protecting and monitoring critical machinery, one name has proven itself above all others: Bently Nevada* from GE Measurement & Control.
