OLED lighting application market is still far away due to high cost

According to the new year market launch plan released by Samsung and LG, OLED will become the first theme of global color TV in 2013. In China, AMOLED production lines of several companies such as Visionox, BOE, Shanghai Tianma and AU Optronics have been launched.
In the field of lighting, OLED is also gaining momentum. The differentiated advantages of OLEDs over LEDs determine that OLEDs will segment the market in multiple lighting areas with LEDs. "In the future, OLED lighting is expected to form another huge industry with a value of 100 billion yuan." Dr. Wang Jinshan, president of Nanjing Dijon Organic Optoelectronics, who has been in the field of OLED research and development for many years, told reporters that "OLED is a surface emitting light, and its energy efficiency of light source can reach 90%; The unit's light-emitting area is also large, which is more conducive to heat dissipation, which not only reduces energy consumption, but also greatly reduces the cost of using heat sinks. When mass production is achieved, OLED lighting will be cheaper than LEDs."
OLED is an abbreviation of "Organic Light Emitting Diode", which is translated into "Organic Light Emitting Diode" in Chinese. It is a semiconductor device that converts electrical energy into light energy, and illuminates the luminescent material by current. As a next-generation emerging lighting technology that may be behind LEDs, OLEDs have many new features that excite the luminaire designers: they are extremely slim and no longer require expensive packaging. Can be made into a variety of shapes, taking up very little space, and can be seamlessly integrated into the design environment, only to be detected when the power is turned on. This results in a visually new lighting experience: roll-shaped electronic newspapers, integrated video film, flexible device panel lighting and transparent lighting walls.
He Wei, deputy general manager of Shanghai Tianma Microelectronics Project Department, made an image metaphor: "You can imagine a window, natural daytime lighting, soft and light brilliance at night, this will not be magic, but the use of OLED on the window. Technology. Transparent OLEDs and flexible OLEDs will bring extraordinary design inspiration and artistic beauty to lighting solutions,"
Previously, Yuba Blu-ray seriously burned the baby's eyes, and it would be difficult to avoid the blue LED's questioning. It is considered difficult to overcome the home lighting field. The OLED light source can imitate the daylight color and can have better performance in protecting vision.
Cost trouble
It is reported that due to the small range of suppliers of materials and equipment for the manufacture of OLED lighting fixtures, the maturity of product technology is not high, resulting in high production costs of OLED lighting products. Currently, 95% of OLED lighting applications are used. Featured lighting, such as luxury lighting.
"Technically, we have now achieved a white light OLED lighting panel with an emission efficiency of 55 lm/W and a color rendering index CRI of over 85 on a 200 mm panel, but with the current luminous efficiency and production of OLED lighting. Cost, to achieve the current scale of LED, at least 5 years of market cultivation." Wang Jinshan believes that the biggest problem of the current application of OLED is the price. He Feng, founder and executive executive of Nanjing Dijon Organic Optoelectronics, also said: "The cost is the most critical factor that restricts the delayed start of the OLED lighting market. We hope to improve the luminous efficiency and cost of OLED lighting to enable OLEDs in the field of lighting. The competitiveness of the products has been accelerated, and the price will be reduced from the current 1000-2000 yuan/klm to 60 yuan/klm by 2016-2017."
According to the current technology development speed of OLED lighting, Displaybank estimates that the efficiency of 100x100 square millimeters (mm2) OLED modules will exceed 200lm/W by 2020, and the unit material cost will be reduced to less than $3.
Compared with the application of OLED on small and medium-sized display screens, the current consumer awareness of OLED lighting products is very low. The reporter interviewed a number of LED distributors and lighting designers, all of which said that little is known about OLED lighting products. Some have not even heard of it.
Far away market
The original Hangzhou Zhoushi lighting designer Bumblebee said: "I have only seen OLED lamps in magazines before, and have not seen them in the market. Take the indoor lighting market as an example. The market accepts LEDs for only three or five years, but currently LEDs are The average level of illumination is still less than the maturity and stability of traditional metal halide lamps, and its market penetration rate is still insufficient. It is likely to take a longer time to promote OLEDs in a wide range."
According to the newly formulated national “Twelfth Five-Year” solid-state lighting plan, 30% of general lighting in China will use solid-state lighting within five years. This means that in the next 3-5 years, OLED is likely to compete with LEDs.
Zhang Haiqi, honorary chairman of the Shanghai Lighting Society, believes that OLEDs need to undergo years of market incubation in order to achieve high quality and low price: on the one hand, the maturity of technology needs to be translated into a large decline in the cost of production, and the price is the market share. The key factor; on the other hand, the adaptation of the consumer's face light source will take a long time to change.
According to Wang Jinshan, Nanjing Dijon Organic Optoelectronics has built a 200mm × 200mm OLED lighting pilot scale (G1 line), and successfully illuminated at the end of 2011. The OLED lighting Wanping-level production line under construction has a production capacity of 20,000 square meters. It is planned to start trial production in the first half of this year. When to start building a higher-capacity production line depends on the market's response to OLED lighting products.
At present, OLEDs, including European companies such as Philips, Osram, Merck, Novaled, and Japanese manufacturers such as Mitsubishi Chemical, Sharp, KANEKA, Panasonic, and Toshiba are still in trial production or experimental mass production. Several companies led by LG Chem have announced that they will launch energy-efficient or transparent OLED lighting products of more than 80 lumens (lm/W) this year.
