According to Yonhap News Agency, LG Electronics, a leading South Korean consumer electronics and home appliance manufacturer, recently announced that its variable-frequency direct-drive (DD) washing machine motor has been in production since 1998. To date, the company has manufactured an impressive 70 million units of this advanced motor technology.

LG explains that its DD motors are designed to connect directly to the washing drum, significantly reducing noise and vibration while enhancing durability and energy efficiency. This innovation has helped LG maintain a strong position in the global market for high-performance home appliances.
A significant portion of these DD motors is produced at LG’s Changwon plant, located about 398 kilometers south of Seoul. The plant began producing DD motors in 2005 with an annual output of 1 million units. Since then, production has surged, reaching 8 million units in 2017 alone. That's a massive growth over just a few years.
To put the scale of production into perspective, LG noted that the total length of the cables used in the 70 million DD motors would be enough to make 22 round trips between the Earth and the Moon. That's an incredible distance!
The company also highlighted that its DD motors have received certifications from prestigious international organizations, including the German VDE. This recognition underscores the quality and reliability of LG's technology.
For over two decades, LG's in-house production of DD motors has made it a favorite among consumers worldwide. The company continues to innovate, having developed the fourth-generation inverter direct-drive motor. Compared to the first generation introduced in 1998, the cost of the fourth-generation model is now just a quarter of what it was initially.
These cost reductions have allowed LG to maintain high-quality standards while making advanced technology more accessible. As part of its ongoing efforts, LG aims to integrate high-performance components into more home appliances, ensuring customers can enjoy the latest technological benefits.
