ZVR Receives 15 Million Yuan in Houde Qianhai Pre-A Round of Financing Specializing in Large-space Optical Positioning Program

In October 2017, ZVR, a company specializing in large-space optical positioning solutions, successfully raised 15 million yuan in its pre-A funding round, led by Houde Qianhai. Despite the fluctuating landscape of the VR industry over the past two years, Guo Wei, founder of ZVR, believes the sector has returned to a more stable and growing phase. He notes that VR headset shipments have increased by over 50% year-on-year, with major tech players like Google, Microsoft, Facebook, and Apple continuing to invest heavily. According to Guo, these companies are achieving "commercial success" in developing virtual reality infrastructure and solutions. ZVR introduced the multi-player infrared motion capture system "Goku," designed for use in entertainment, education, and military simulations. The system covers up to 60 square meters with 8–10 devices, and can be expanded to thousands of square meters. It supports tracking of over 100 users simultaneously, capturing full 6-degree-of-freedom movement. Compared to similar foreign products, Goku is priced 1/3 lower, making it an attractive option for large-scale VR applications. When addressing motion capture and spatial positioning, various technologies such as ultrasonics, radio frequency, and computer vision can be used. However, ZVR chose optical technology based on practicality and market trends. Optical systems offer greater flexibility, as they are not restricted by physical space as long as the cameras can cover the area. In contrast, electromagnetic and radio frequency systems often face interference in complex environments. Optical solutions also provide higher accuracy—GPS operates at meter-level precision, Wi-Fi at tens of centimeters, while optical systems can achieve millimeter-level accuracy. Initially, ZVR developed a visible light-based motion capture system using eight circular cameras, offering centimeter-level accuracy. However, this system was affected by ambient lighting, required large markers with distinct colors, and only supported three degrees of freedom. This limitation made it unsuitable for large-scale VR parks, where users needed full 6-degrees-of-freedom movement for immersive experiences. For instance, a player picking up a cup should see a flame inside it and feel the heat. To meet these demands, ZVR shifted from visible light to infrared, which took over a year of development. The new system required high-speed cameras and an independent computing unit to process data quickly and output results in milliseconds. By late 2016, ZVR officially launched the "Goku" system. With a compact design (84mm x 55mm), it offers a frame rate of 260fps, 0.1mm tracking accuracy, and 1.3 million pixels resolution. It can monitor up to 10 meters and track hundreds of square meters with multiple devices. The system can capture 5,000 reflective markers and support over 100 users simultaneously. However, during multiplayer sessions, markers were often obstructed, affecting tracking performance. After extensive research, ZVR integrated deep learning and AI algorithms to track limb movements without relying on physical markers, enabling accurate 6-degree-of-freedom tracking across large spaces. While refining the hardware, the team also explored commercial applications. Today, ZVR focuses on theme parks, education, military simulations, exhibitions, and VR townships. The company currently serves over 30 clients and achieved sales of tens of millions of yuan in 2017.
