On the day before, the China Institute of Mechanical Engineering and Hannover Milano Exhibitions (Shanghai) Co., Ltd. jointly hosted an "Internet+" Strategy Seminar aimed at supporting the transformation and upgrading of the manufacturing industry. The event took place at the Guangdong (Tanzhou) International Convention and Exhibition Center. Notable attendees included Zhu Sen, a director of the Intelligent Manufacturing Expert Consultation Committee under the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, one of the key drafters of the "Made in China 2025" initiative, and a member of the National Strategy Committee for a Manufacturing Powerhouse.

In his speech titled "Integrating Development and Promoting Manufacturing Transformation and Upgrading," Zhu Sen emphasized that Foshan is a major hub for manufacturing. He argued that the transformation of its industrial sector must be driven by integration and development. Traditional manufacturing industries, he said, should transition into digital workshops and smart factories. According to Zhu, any factory that meets five core criteria—market demand alignment, promising development prospects, sufficient product volume, manual operations, and a strong technical foundation—is well-positioned to build a smart factory. Additionally, he recommended that digital workshops should be developed through four key aspects: improving efficiency, ensuring quality, accelerating response times, and enabling mass customization.
Lu Daming, vice chairman and secretary-general of the China Mechanical Engineering Society, highlighted the importance of smart logistics in the context of "Internet+"-driven manufacturing transformation. He explained that intelligent manufacturing and smart logistics are closely intertwined. Without efficient logistics, the supply chain of smart manufacturing would not function effectively. Lu suggested that Foshan’s manufacturers should not only focus on smart logistics within their warehouses but also expand it across the entire supply chain. He stressed that true intelligent manufacturing requires the combination of equipment manufacturing with a robust supply chain and management system.
Both traditional and smart manufacturing sectors rely heavily on talent. In his keynote address, Chen Ming, vice dean of the Sino-German Engineering College at Tongji University, pointed out that in the era of Industry 4.0, the demand for low-skilled and skilled labor will decrease, while the need for high-skilled workers in IT, data analysis, and R&D will rise significantly—by about 200,000 positions. Furthermore, there will be 760,000 new roles emerging, such as mechatronics engineers. Therefore, talent development must now prioritize innovation and adaptability to meet the evolving needs of the industry.
