Dacao Scholars Offer Suggestions for Manufacturing Transformation and Upgrading

On yesterday, the China Institute of Mechanical Engineering and Hannover Milano Exhibitions (Shanghai) Co., Ltd. jointly held a seminar titled "Internet+ Strategy: Helping Manufacturing Transformation and Upgrading" at the Guangdong (Tanzhou) International Convention and Exhibition Center. The event brought together industry leaders, experts, and professionals to discuss the future of manufacturing in the digital age. Among the notable speakers was Zhu Sen, director of the Intelligent Manufacturing Expert Consultation Committee under the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, as well as one of the key drafters of the "Made in China 2025" initiative and a member of the National Strategy Committee for a Manufacturing Powerhouse. In his speech titled “Integrating Development and Promoting Manufacturing Transformation and Upgrading,” Zhu emphasized that Foshan, as a major manufacturing hub, needs to embrace an integrated and innovative approach to modernize its industry. He stressed that traditional manufacturing must evolve by building digital workshops and smart factories. According to him, any factory that meets five key criteria—market demand, development potential, product volume, manual operations, and a strong technical foundation—is suitable for transformation into a smart factory. Additionally, he recommended that digital workshops should be developed through four main aspects: improving efficiency, ensuring quality, accelerating response times, and enabling mass customization. Lu Daming, vice chairman and secretary-general of the China Mechanical Engineering Society, highlighted the importance of smart logistics in the context of the “Internet+” environment. He pointed out that intelligent manufacturing cannot function without smart logistics, as the two are closely interdependent. Without efficient logistics, the supply chain and distribution of smart manufacturing would not be fully realized. Lu encouraged Foshan’s manufacturers to go beyond internal warehouse automation and build comprehensive smart logistics systems across the entire supply chain. Only when equipment manufacturing is combined with advanced supply chain management can true intelligent manufacturing be achieved. The discussion also focused on the critical role of talent in both traditional and smart manufacturing. Chen Ming, vice dean of the Sino-German Engineering College at Tongji University, spoke about the growing demand for skilled workers in the era of Industry 4.0. He noted that while low- and mid-level labor positions may decline, there will be a significant increase in demand for high-skilled workers, IT specialists, data analysts, and R&D engineers—by approximately 200,000 new roles. Moreover, 760,000 new job positions are expected to emerge, including roles in mechatronics and other specialized fields. As a result, education and training programs must prioritize innovation and skill development to meet these evolving needs. This seminar provided valuable insights into how Foshan and other manufacturing centers can leverage technology, logistics, and human resources to drive sustainable growth and competitiveness in the global market.
