The advent of advanced glass technology or promote the development of OLED lighting

PPG Industries has recently been awarded the "Significant Achievement Award" by the US Department of Energy (DOE) in recognition of its outstanding contribution to the development of organic light-emitting diode (OLED) lighting technology. At the "Semiconductor Lighting (SSL) Research and Development Seminar 2013" held in Long Beach, California, USA, Dr. Dennis O'Shaughnessy, Deputy Director of Research and Development of PPG Flat Glass Division, accepted the award on behalf of the PPG research and development team .

The main research results of PPG come from a two-year project in which it participated. The project was initiated by the US Department of Energy in 2010 and aims to promote the commercialization and mass production of OLED lighting. Under the leadership of project engineer Dr. Abhinav Bhandari, the PPG R & D team successfully developed an integrated float glass substrate that uses scalable light extraction technology and transparent conductive film, which can be applied to OLED lighting applications.

Compared with traditional display grade indium tin oxide (ITO) coated glass substrates, this new research result has significant advantages in terms of cost and performance. According to Dr. O'Shaughnessy, PPG's light extraction technology can be used in conjunction with traditional float glass manufacturing processes, which can effectively improve device efficiency.

Dick Beuke, vice president of PPG's flat glass business unit, said that PPG has always been committed to reducing energy consumption in the United States. This new type of glass substrate is one of several major attempts launched by the company. "We are honored to develop more advanced glass technology to help OLED lighting achieve large-scale applications." He pointed out: "This research further consolidates and supplements the results we have achieved in the field of architectural glass and coatings, helping to create More energy-efficient and environmentally friendly houses and buildings. In the field of solar energy, this technology is also expected to help the photovoltaic industry achieve electricity parity. "

Dr. MehranArbab, Director of PPG Glass Science and Technology, added: "The brightness of each watt of OLED lighting can be up to four times that of incandescent light bulbs. Therefore, once this technology is fully commercialized, it will significantly reduce the energy of homes, buildings and office spaces Consumption. "

At the three-day seminar, PPG was the only company to receive recognition from the US Department of Energy in the field of OLED lighting. The seminar attracted nearly 300 researchers, manufacturers and industry participants to jointly promote and pay attention to the latest developments in semiconductor lighting technology. The US Department of Energy fully supports the research and development of semiconductor lighting and hopes to bring high-efficiency and high-performance semiconductor lighting products to the market as soon as possible. The goal is to "create a new market for efficient general lighting products led by the United States by advancing the development of semiconductor technology, thereby achieving the goals of saving energy, reducing costs, and improving the quality of the lighting environment."

PPG: Innovation, as you can see

PPG Industries' goal is to continue to maintain its position as the world's leading supplier of coatings and special products. With its leadership in innovation, sustainable development, and color, PPG helps customers from industries, transportation, consumer products, construction, and other aftermarket markets improve the appearance of their products in a variety of ways. PPG Industries was founded in 1883 and is headquartered in Pittsburgh, USA, with production bases and affiliates in more than 70 countries around the world. In 2012, PPG achieved global sales of 15.2 billion U.S. dollars and was listed on the New York Stock Exchange.

This award is in recognition of PPG's outstanding contribution to promoting the development of organic light-emitting diode (OLED) lighting technology. PPG's R & D team has developed an integrated substrate based on float glass to help large-scale commercialization of energy-saving OLED lighting technology, and thus won this award. At the "2013 Seminar on Semiconductor Lighting (SSL) Research and Development" held in Long Beach, California, the PPG R & D team accepted the award. In addition to Dr. Bhandari and Dr. O'Shaughnessy, this R & D team of 6 experts also includes Dr. MehranArbab, Director of Glass Science and Technology, Dr. Harry Buhay, scientist, Dr. Ashtosh Ganjoo, assistant researcher, and Dr. SongweiLu, assistant researcher.
