Meet the size requirements

The small form factor design of existing products not only limits the physical size of the alternative, but also limits the heat limit/heat dissipation design. When the size is limited, heat dissipation becomes a key factor in the design because the LED needs to dissipate a large amount of heat through the heat sink of the bulb.

The direct result of the heat loss problem is the impact on the operating life of the driver board. The higher the luminous intensity, the higher the operating temperature of the lamp (often working at +80 ° C to +100 ° C). At such temperatures, the electrolytic capacitors on the driver board do not operate for more than a few thousand hours, which limits the life of the bulb.

Lifetime is the key to LED lighting alternatives, and Maxim has developed 120VAC/230VAC and 12VAC input lighting solutions for this need. LED drivers do not require the installation of electrolytic capacitors on the board, which can operate for up to 90,000 hours. Since the electrolytic capacitor is omitted, the size of the solution is also reduced, so that the driver board can be easily inserted into a small-sized slot.

Electrically compatible

LED lighting replacement solutions must work correctly in current cut-off dimming (triac or trailing edge dimming) and electronic transformer construction.

Lamps powered by 120VAC/230VAC are typically dimmed with triacs, which are ideal for resistive loads such as incandescent and halogen lamps. However, the standard LED driver is a non-linear load. When the AC input voltage reaches its peak value, the input bridge rectifier will absorb the high-brightness peak current for a short period of time. At this time, the opening current and holding current required by the dimmer will not be met, causing the dimmer to turn off and the bulb to flash.

The electrical architecture of the 12VAC input bulb is more complex, and the transformer input and the dimmer may be connected to the bulb input. The traditional driver design is not compatible with transformers and dimmers, causing the bulb to flicker.

Maxim's 120VAC/230VAC input and 12VAC input LED lighting solutions use a one-stage conversion architecture that uses patented technology to control current. These drivers are capable of adjusting brightness through a cut-off dimmer and are compatible with transformer designs. In addition, we offer a solution that achieves a power factor of 0.9 with only a few external components and no electrolytic capacitors. Provides 120VAC/230VAC and 12VAC evaluation solutions for mass production. Maxim is the only solution provider that offers these combined advantages.
