Pore size analysis is a crucial technique in material science, used to determine the structural properties of porous materials. In 2010, the U.S. Dispersed Technology Corporation (DT) and Conta Instruments collaborated to develop the electroacoustic electro-vibration method, while the Belgian company Occhio introduced an imaging-based approach for analyzing large pores. Each technique has its own advantages and limitations depending on the pore size range and the type of material being studied.

Gas adsorption is one of the most widely used techniques for pore size characterization due to its broad measurement range, which spans from 0.35 nm up to over 100 nm, covering micropores, mesopores, and even some macropores. Compared to other methods, it is relatively easy to implement and cost-effective. When combined with mercury intrusion, the pore size analysis range can extend from approximately 0.35 nm to 1 mm. Additionally, gas adsorption is particularly effective for measuring surface areas, including irregular surfaces and internal voids, making it a versatile tool in various applications such as catalysis, filtration, and energy storage.
