Microchip Technology Inc., a global leader in integrated solutions for microcontrollers, mixed-signal, analog devices, and flash memory, has announced the launch of the PIC16(L)F161X family of 8-bit microcontrollers. This new series expands the PICTM product line and introduces advanced core-independent peripherals (CIPs), offering enhanced performance, efficiency, and safety for a wide range of applications.
The PIC16(L)F161X microcontrollers are designed with closed-loop digital control and built-in safety monitoring, making them ideal for industrial, automotive, and consumer electronics. These microcontrollers feature hardware-based peripherals such as a Mathematical Accelerator (MATH ACC) that supports PID calculations without involving the CPU, allowing it to focus on other critical tasks. Additionally, the Angular Timer (AngTmr) module enables precise angle measurement for motor control, TRIAC control, or capacitive discharge ignition (CDI) systems, eliminating the need for complex software routines.
Other key features include a 24-bit Signal Measurement Timer (SMT) for high-resolution signal analysis, a Zero-Crossing Detection (ZCD) module for simplified TRIAC control, and high-current I/O (up to 100 mA) for direct drive capabilities. The family also includes configurable logic cells (CLC), I2C, SPI, and EUSART communication interfaces, making it highly flexible for various system designs.
To ensure reliability and safety, the PIC16(L)F161X series integrates a Windowed Watchdog Timer (WWDT) and CRC/SCAN memory scan for fault detection and protection. These features help meet Class B and UL 1998 standards, ensuring safe operation even under adverse conditions. The microcontrollers also support low-power XLP technology and come in compact packages with 8, 14, and 20 pins, making them suitable for space-constrained applications.
Steve Drehobl, Vice President of Microchip’s MCU8 business unit, highlighted that the CIPs in the PIC16(L)F161X family significantly reduce development time and complexity by minimizing the need for custom code. “These peripherals allow designers to implement advanced functions like motor control and safety monitoring with minimal kernel intervention,†he said. “This not only improves customization but also reduces code development effort.â€
For developers, Microchip offers a comprehensive set of tools, including the PICkit 3 and MPLAB ICD 3 programmers/debuggers, along with the MPLAB Code Configurator. This toolset allows for quick configuration of peripherals and generates efficient C code, accelerating the design process from concept to prototype.
Samples of the PIC16(L)F161X family are now available in multiple package options, including PDIP, SOIC, TSSOP, UQFN, and QFN. Production quantities start at 10,000 units, with availability varying by model. This new family of microcontrollers is poised to become a popular choice for engineers looking for high-performance, low-cost, and easy-to-integrate solutions.
