Microchip Announces New Microcontroller Family

Microchip Technology Inc. has recently introduced a new family of 8-bit PIC microcontrollers, the PIC16(L)F161X series, designed to simplify system design and enhance performance. These microcontrollers are equipped with core-independent peripherals (CIPs), which allow for advanced control and safety monitoring without requiring constant CPU intervention. This makes them ideal for applications such as motor control, TRIAC control, and other real-time tasks. One of the key features of the PIC16(L)F161X is the Math Accelerator (MATH ACC), which supports kernel-independent calculations like 16-bit math and PID operations. This reduces the load on the CPU, allowing it to focus on other critical tasks. Additionally, the Angular Timer (AngTmr) provides precise angle measurement for motor control, TRIAC control, or CDI systems, generating interrupts at specific rotation angles without relying on software calculations. The series also includes a 24-bit Signal Measurement Timer (SMT) that offers high-resolution signal measurement for accurate speed control and ranging. The Zero-Crossing Detection (ZCD) module simplifies TRIAC control by detecting AC voltage zero crossings, reducing the need for complex software and lowering BOM costs. Other notable features include high-current I/O (up to 100 mA), configurable logic cells (CLC), and multiple communication interfaces such as I2C, SPI, and EUSART. To ensure reliability and safety, the PIC16(L)F161X includes a Windowed Watchdog Timer (WWDT) and CRC/SCAN memory scan, supporting compliance with Class B and UL 1998 standards. Hardware-limiting timers (HLTs) further enhance system security by monitoring hardware failures without CPU involvement. Designed for low-power applications, the PIC16(L)F161X family comes in small packages with 8, 14, and 20 pins, making it suitable for a wide range of embedded systems. Microchip provides comprehensive development tools, including the MPLAB X IDE and the MPLAB Code Configurator, enabling designers to quickly configure and develop applications with minimal effort. Samples and production units are now available for various models in different package types, with full availability expected in early next year.
