SigmaTel today announced the launch of its first FM tuner solution based on an optimized radio architecture for portable multimedia devices such as MP3, portable audio/video and mobile phones.

The STFM1000 is a companion processor for SigmaTel's STMP3500 and STMP3600 family of system-on-chip (SoC) solutions, delivering exceptional FM functionality to customers. This new optimized architecture uses CMOS and integrates many of the external components commonly used in competing solutions to help customers significantly reduce overall system cost and board space.

Michael Wodopian, senior vice president of portable system-on-chips at SigmaTel, said: "The new STFM1000 FM tuner solution combined with the 3500 and 3600 series products further enhances SigmaTel's competitiveness in portable audio solutions. Optimized radio architecture gives our products a higher level of integration, delivering the highest quality and highest level of integration at the lowest system cost on the market today."

The STFM1000 digitally transmits data to SoCs such as the STMP3500 or STMP3600, allowing users to experience the same sound as listening to MP3 while listening to FM radio. The STFM1000's optimized radio architecture transfers FM data, signal quality indication information and RDS to the STMP3600 via a proprietary two-wire SigmaTel interface. In addition, the STFM1000 includes a standard 3-wire I2S interface to support the STMP3500 and other SoCs on the market, including those found in mobile phones.

The SigmaTel FM tuner integrates a low-noise RF amplifier with high sensitivity, which improves FM performance and composite filtering to suppress noise and improve sound fidelity in low signal conditions. The optimized radio architecture supports different FM bands in the US, Europe, Japan, and Asia. Its innovative design has achieved 15 patent applications, and many more applications are currently in the process of patent application.

SigmaTel can provide customers with STFM1000 software through its Software Development Kit (SDK), which allows customers to develop their own applications. SigmaTel has now begun to provide reference design legends for the STMP3500 and STMP3600. In the first half of December 2005, relevant development systems, engineering verification systems and player display models will be launched.
