Application of Frequency Converter in EPS Emergency Power Supply Industry

One, EPS

EPS (Emergency Power Supply) is an emergency power supply. As a fire-fighting equipment, municipal facility, medical facility, enterprise, factory, or other equipment, the power supply equipment for emergency power can be provided when the mains power grid fails. Compared with the conventional standby generator emergency power supply, EPS has obvious advantages in terms of starting speed, noise and vibration, maintainability, power supply quality, overload capacity, self-protection characteristics, and environmental pollution.

EPS is divided into three types according to different types of loads: lighting type, power type, and illumination type. The corresponding loads are lighting load, motor load (fire pump, etc.), and lighting and motor mixed load.

Second, the application requirements of the inverter in the EPS power supply industry

When the utility power is not normal, the EPS is driven by the internal inverter output AC power, and the inverter plays the role of the inverter in the EPS. Therefore, the inverter must meet various requirements of the EPS to ensure the same power quality as the mains.

The EPS supplies power to the inverter through the battery pack, so the auxiliary power supply of the inverter must be supplied with DC power. The auxiliary power input for the AC input cannot meet the requirements of the EPS. The same principle, the cooling fan of the inverter can not use the AC fan, and the soft contactor of the inverter cannot use the AC contactor.

Since EPS is an emergency power supply device that replaces mains electricity, EPS output voltage quality is also an important indicator, including harmonic content of EPS output voltage, load adjustment rate of EPS output voltage, and stability of EPS output voltage. In this way, it is required that when the load changes or the battery voltage changes within a certain range, the inverter output voltage change is as small as possible, and the harmonic content of the output voltage is sufficiently small.

In very important occasions, the EPS needs to have a strong start function, that is, when the battery pack is low in battery power, the battery pack supply voltage to the inverter is lower than the input voltage undervoltage point of the inverter, but the inverter still needs to work normally and has a certain voltage. Current output capability does not allow for undervoltage faults.
