Anatomy of driverless car equipment is actually not expensive

Driverless cars are still at the conceptual stage for our average consumers, and the subconscious also tells us that the price of unmanned production cars is definitely far from them. After all, it is tens of thousands of dollars to install a safety bag and a technology package for the entire vehicle. But the facts that follow are surprising—according to estimates by the Boston Consulting Group, the hardware needed for driverless cars is not as expensive as it might seem, and is actually more expensive than the safety packs on the market. Not much money.

According to a survey by the Boston Consulting Group, the basic autopilot function for a car costs about $5,500; the automatic parking feature costs about $2,000. Of course, the automatic parking here is different from the automatic parking that is common in current production cars. It can automatically shift gears, automatically direction, automatically step on the throttle and brakes; the full version of the driverless module costs about $10,000. This price will gradually decrease as the driverless car develops.

The hardware part of a driverless car consists of three main components: the sensor, the processor, and the actuator. As the name implies, the sensor is used to detect the environment around the driverless car; the processor is used to analyze the data collected by the sensor, and then converted into a specific car action after analysis; the actuator is used to help the driving computer to complete shifting, braking, steering, etc. action. Among the three, the sensor is the most difficult part to achieve, and the remaining two parts of the market already have mature solutions, and only need to be optimized in the later stage.

The picture at the head of the text shows us roughly the sensor modules included in a driverless car and their respective estimated prices. In fact, many of these things are not strange to us - such as cameras, radar and ultrasonic sensors. High-end cars with rich technology configurations on the market have already used these modules: the camera is used to implement reversing images or lane keeping, and the radar is used to detect the distance between the front and rear of the car and the obstacles (or ACC adaptive cruise), ultrasonic sensors. Used to achieve automatic parking and so on. Due to their maturity, their prices are also low, ranging from $15 to $200.

The real difficulty is LIDaR (Lidar) and high-precision GPS systems. The price of the former is high or low, but the cheaper lidar function of less than $100 is very limited, and the truly available lidar is expensive. Take Google’s driverless car as an example. There are 64 laser emitters deployed to detect the environment around the car in real time, costing more than $50,000, even if the second-generation Google driverless car reduced the price of the lidar module to $8,000. Ordinary consumers are also unbearable. You may ask, what is the price of the GPS system? But the high-precision GPS system that will be used on driverless cars must be positioned to "centimeter" rather than the "meter" of traditional GPS. At this stage, the accuracy of the GPS system is also quoted at around $6,000.

However, the above mentioned content is not an obstacle to driverless cars, because the car factory uses sensors in many ways and does not rely entirely on one sensor. In addition, with the rapid advancement of technology, the price of these modules will be further explored. It may take a few years to buy a driverless car and only need to spend tens of thousands of dollars more than the ordinary car.

This dmx512 Led Decoder allows for led lights to be controlled via a dmx controller by accepting both dc supply voltage and your dmx controller signal and distributing it to attached led lights . This led decoder accepts XLR-3 type connections for the DMX signal input and output . The Dmx Decoder controller adopts the advanced control unit, receives standard DMX512 digital control signal and transformed it into PWM signal to driving LED. As a powerful color managing controller, it will enable you to choose the desired pattern and appropriate speed to manage your RGB LED lighting fixtures.
