LED standardization (1): South Korea set about developing and implementing standardized specifications

Although LED lighting still has price and reliability issues, the industry has been expanding. Recently, in order to further promote the popularization of LED lighting and industrial development, LED standardization issues related to safety specifications and reliability specifications have been widely discussed. Not only are Japan, the United States and Europe, which have already taken the lead in the market, but also emerging market countries and regions such as South Korea and Taiwan are also discussing, but in fact it is still far from standardization. But this situation has changed in 2009: South Korea has taken steps to develop and implement standardized specifications from March 2009.

Following South Korea, China and Taiwan have also begun standardization work, which is expected to be implemented as early as 2010. At present, Taiwan's "Ministry of Economic Affairs" Standards Inspection Bureau said that 35 kinds of LED-related standardization will be carried out in CNS (China National Standars), and 12 of them have been reviewed for standardization of LED lighting. Moreover, the LED Lighting Standards Working Group of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology of the People's Republic of China also indicated that it has basically completed the formulation of seven LED lighting standards. In Japan, although the government and various industrial associations have extensively discussed the formulation of relevant standards, they have not yet entered the formulation stage and are still under review. Although Japan and other countries as LED advanced countries have been actively working on the standardization of LED lighting, they are still one step behind Korea.

What standard specifications has Korea developed? Why can we walk in the forefront of standardization? ... Through this investigation, we learned that the intention of South Korea’s move is to seize business opportunities as soon as possible.

Some KS certification standards are related to LED lighting

In South Korea, the regulations for LED lighting products are to pass the "KS certification standard". To be precise, the certification standards for LED lighting products are included in the KS certification standard. The KS certification standard was originally introduced by the Technical Standards Institute of the Ministry of Knowledge Economy of Korea in 1963. In 2009, it was partially modified to increase the part related to LED lighting. In fact, this is the first revision of the KS certification standard in 46 years.

There are three types of products to be promoted for the first time (implemented on March 1, 2009). Produced by Granage LLP according to the "LED Lighting KS Certification Public Hearing Information" of the Technical Standards Institute of the Ministry of Knowledge Economy of Korea.

The KS certification standard is the abbreviation of Korean Industrial Standards. That is, the industrial product standard specifications established according to the industry standardization law, the purpose is to maintain and improve the quality of Korean industrial products. This time, the variety of quality management objects has been increased or decreased, the review standards have been revised, and the certification system has been improved. The target product has added 48 varieties in the cutting-edge industry, including LEDs, rechargeable batteries, organic EL and display components. The KS certification standard is divided into 17 categories, labeled with A to X. LED illumination is included in the motor section (C).
